How Much Planning Goes Into Your Gameplay?

Like lots of the others here, I have characters ( based on traits, career, looks/clothing, relationships, goals/aspirations and a general sort of attitude). It can take a long time to create the Sim/s and furnish their apartment or house.
Then I sort of play it out + see where the game takes me.
I’ve written sim-lit blogs including one where I got quite far developing the Pancakes story.
NOW I am discovering the joys of rotational play. I started with a “flat” of three of my female YA characters in the roomies old house in Oasis Springs. One met and has kids with Bob Pancakes in Willow Creek -that was not planned. One has a female (yes) spouse and an adopted daughter -mostly planned, though I didn’t know who the other spouse would be. One is a single parent in a cheap apartment in San Myshuno -I originally hadn’t planned the affair with her neighbour, but developed it purposefully.
I keep elaborate, physical, real world notes on goals/skills/career progress and thoughts that pop into my head.
