How to link copy sim look to mermaid?

I made a mermaid with the kelp, but the option to copy sim look to mermaid look is greyed out.

Why?

How do I make my sim look identical (all skin details) + skintone/etc but just with a tail?

    if they are linked, human form changes if merform is edited, but not the other way around. Which is awful
