If you have Kids Room Stuff, kids can try to collect all 20 Voidcritter cards, level up their critters and do battle with other kids.
Create social groups with clubs. Give them a goal (like playing at the park together, fighting another gang of kids, trading and battling Voidcritters) or make after-school clubs (a swimming club that swims at the public pool, or a choir that sings at an old folks' home.)
If you have Seasons, they can join scouts and earn badges.
As Nat said, make lots that are great for kids. I have a rec center where sims of all ages can socialize, skill build and learn new things. I also have an old folks' home, so the kids can go there and keep the elders company.
Pick fights with other kids or their siblings. Get in on some rivalries that can last a lifetime.
If you have Realm of Magic, you can download a mod to let kids practice magic. It's a lot of fun.
Not part of the game itself, but you can go on Twitter or the Sims forums and continually ask the devs to add dragons into the game. Kids love dragons, obviously they would benefit from having one as a pet.
