Journal works pretty good. There is also calling the sadness helpline, crying in a bed or closet, watering plants with tears - sure there are some others too. Or, you can try to overcome the sad moodlet with another - ponder moves on a chessboard to try to get focused, take brisk showers to try to get energized or thoughtful showers to get inspired (the lump of clay works better for this though), watch comedy to try to get playful, etc.
Not totally sure any of this will work with the number of death calls regardless of relationship I keep reading about - I play with aging off so do not have this nightmare.
I have used the journal many times with teens though when they get those really strong mood swings and it always helps. Good luck!
