- You could play as the Sim's mother and have her visit the son with the urn in her inventory and leave it at his house.

That doesn't work, I tried that first.
Really? I have a family cemetery on the main lot for the family I play, and I've had sims running around picking up urns for moved-out-and-marked-unplayed family members. So long as I can find the urn (which I sometimes can't; it would be great if death notifications would specify at least where the sim died and/or who was in their household at the time,) I've always been able to pick it up and move it to the cemetery, even if the sim picking up the urn lives on neither the lot where the family member died nor the family lot that has the cemetery.
It's fairly embarrassing how crazy it's going to drive me wondering what I did differently.
I do use mods, but there's nothing i can think of the could predictably have that effect, and I haven't seen anything mentioned about that being an effect of any mod."simmerlyrose;c-16485621" wrote:

Thanks, I'll try that!- If an urn is out on another lot, you can just travel there and drag it into your sim's inventory.

- That's interesting. What mods do you have?
