How to remove the flash on selfies and photos?

I'm sure I'm overlooking something obvious. When I go into my screenshots, all selfies, and most photos are almost completely washed out and unusable. What am I missing that would stop the flash? Is i...

There's a button on the screen when you take a photograph to toggle the flash between on, off and auto. I'm pretty sure it's there for all pictures (i.e. phones and cameras)

Also make sure you don't have the brighten filter turned on, which is one of the camera filter options that you can use.
