I did dumpster diving 1,000 times to see the items

Okay so, I did a thing and made my sims dumpster dive around 1,000 times (yes, I counted) and kept all the items I found and collected them together to see the general range of items you can find from dumpsters. I love doing challenges where I need to furnish my whole home without using buy mode at all but I've struggled a lot to find especially kitchen counters and been wondering could I furnish a kids bedroom with dumpster items.

So, I did an experiment with 25 dumpsters and 8 sims in one lot. All the sims were freegans and had the collector bonus trait and I used only the "dive for deals" option. In the pictures you can see the results, there's everything I found - except dyes (I threw them away to create more trash, there were soo many of them) and upgrade parts. As you can see, I found e.g. 33 bikes, 11 fridges, 4 ovens, 26 beds, 4 computers, 18 TVs (I'm laughing how I got 7 of the framed TVs from the "Cozy Celebrations Event" that aren't even available yet lol),  17 bathtubs, 2 showers, 4 toilets, 3 normal counters and 8 islands. I didn't count how much money I found but the largest single amount I found was 248 simoleons.

I know there's other stuff you can find as well but I think this is pretty interesting from thousand dumpster dives. The small number of showers, toilets and kitchen counters is crazy. I also noted that I didn't find a single bookshelf, no skill items, and very few collectibles,

I did this for my own interest but thought to share the results in case someone else might be interested too 😄 I don't know if there are some factors that affect what type of items you find (the lot type? neighbourhood? world?), feel free to share if you have any insight on that.

  • That's what i call dedication, Wow 1000 times. It is intersting to see them all laid out and how many useful items there are. I tried decorating my entire house with dumpster stuff , but i ran out of patience.  I was living in the spot near 2 dumpsters and that was the job I gave my sim and somehow I got sidetracked and forgot my aim.

Wow, that's a good tip, haven't thought of that! Gotta try it now haha. Thanks!

You can fix them without playing the career by getting the repair object out of debug. You can place it on a sales table and then from there you can add it to your inventory and use it without playing the career.

  • This is interesting! Am I seeing right you only got one of the TVs that came with Eco Lifestyle and is only available via dumpster diving? That makes me sad because I like that TV. I actually bought Basement Treasures Kit so I would have an easier access to a similar TV, but I still hope the chances of finding one were higher!

It's a bit hard to see but there's actually 7 of those TVs! There's only one of those Basement Treasures TVs, which are a bit bigger.

Seriously, thanks for the tip about the SimRay! This is a whole chapter of playing I didn't know we could do in the game and am now immersed in the Scientist career, plotting all kinds of chaos to shake my game up. I guess there are a few things about the game I have somehow missed! With these sales, I keep adding to my game but am not giving myself time to explore everything about the new packs, before I get another and I see now I am missing things. My game was getting a little boring. Not anymore! 🤣

In case you didn't know this, and if you'd be ok with using cheats, that Eco Lifestyle TV is also available when using these cheats:

    First: testingcheats true

    Then: bb.showHiddenObjects

    And also: bb.ShowLiveEditObjects

After those cheat codes were used, that TV should appear to the Build Buy Catalog in the Electronics category where are all the TVs. So this is also a way to get that TV. But I understand that some players prefer to get those special gameplay items without using cheats. 😊
