I like to play rotational too, it can help to have really really really basic story idea and go from there only give households a couple days at the most while picking and choosing what you want or having something in common for them so you can tick off what is different. For example I currently have several sims with farms, the main one because the wife wanted to flirt with Patchy, I let her wife, the tired lonely farmer explore the creature keeper and scarecrow who wasn't all that interested since she has no connection to the land he helps care for. In the second one they the pair is devoted to each other and will have a child. Moving on I noticed a sim's job is different which used to be an issue in 2 I think but the game is fine so I let him role with it to move on wether his elderly parents can keep the farm or not which could lead to anything. The newest, I was already in a bad mood so when a sim went into the wrong bedroom I killed her, removed her son's care with a reward potion, the eldest is using her 'life insurance' money to get their farm up and running while playing parent to his younger brothers.
Fun times....I have some old saves i keep cause I got attached they might need some farms to spin off of too.
