They work to make the product. Why is it scummy for them the ask to be paid for their efforts? I assume you have a job? Do you go to work for the fun of it? Or do you expect to be paid? Are you scummy for wanting a paycheck? Pleae explain how it is different?
OK, I have read this response several times now and I still can't get my head around the point you are actually trying to make. A game developer releasing monthly DLC isn't the same thing at all.
Yes, I do have a job and yes I am paid for my work but I don't find excuses to get my bosses to pay me more money at every opportunity. I don't constantly harass and nag my bosses to pay me more money because "Oh, I did X this week and I don't normally do X", I don't create extra work out of thin air solely so I can later claim I did it and receive more money and I don't nag my bosses for more money when I end up doing overtime to get something finished because I chose to do that willingly and I know there is no overtime pay in my contract.
As I already said, I do not expect to get anything for free because I am simply not that kind of person, if I want something then I will spend the money for it but there comes a point where the wallet has to close and this is one of those instances - for me EA are being far too aggressive with their constant DLC packs and I find it to be obnoxious. They don't have to release these premium-priced monthly packs every month, they choose to do it. It puts me off wanting to spend money on the game because, to me, it is a black hole and a money pit.
I feel as though there is simply no need for EA to do this and I look down on ANY developer who decides to follow this kind of model for their premium-priced AAA titles.
If other people don't mind this kind of heavy DLC schedule then that's cool by me and I certainly don't begrudge anyone who wants to buy these packs, but for me personally I find it obnoxious, scummy and greedy.
But you DO expect your employer to continue to pay you. You would never accept being told that you had been paid once, but were still expected to continue to work and produce without further payment.
As far as working 60-80 hours a week with no time off (you know this how?) is a choice that an employee makes. Last time I checked, slavery is still illegal in the United States.
How much did you pay for your froo froo coffee this morning? Bypass two of those and you are nearly at the cost of a stuff pack.
Typical salary/contract workers work as long as the boss/contract say they work. They get paid a set amount no matter how much or how little you work. I was a Government employee for 20 yrs and worked an avg of 60 - 80 hrs a week for the whole 20 yrs. According to my cousin who is a software engineer in the gaming industry, most dev positions are contact jobs or salary positions. Unless it's in your contract that they can't work you over a certain amount of hours a week, you are theirs 24/7 a week, 365 a year.
Don't think anything Maxis/EA does is not to benefit them and the bottom line in some way. EA isn't the only publishers that put profit ahead of everything else (quantity over quality), they are just at the forefront. They are paying the price for it as well. Look at EA's how the past few years releases and you will see a trend of lighter games with more DLC for a premium price. Starwars Battlefront game which released last Nov, is dying a quick death already and it's due mostly to greedy game design which includes a stripped down base game among other things.
Bottom line, people are getting tired of being ripped off by gaming companies. Only recent gamers are accustomed to this type of practice and don't really see a problem with it. EA is going after this generation of gamer since that is what they are used to. Those of us who don't like it can either stop giving money to publishers/devs who include this type practice or give in to it and continue to support it. If you choose to support this behavior, your also giving up the right to complain about it later.
