It just takes a bit of practice. Start with simple rectangle/square builds and branch off from there. This is why I have one save file in which I do nothing more than build. Once you get the basics, you can experiment. Also, there are tutorials on building and roofs to reference via youtube.

@sandysim Building can be a chore sometimes and making a roof can be a hassle it takes a lot of practice. The tip I can give you is start out with something simple like a long house and slowly add on from there also as northdakotagamer has suggested there are many tutorials on building.
