I've been playing Sims 3 today, starting out with my freshly made four Sims and so far I must say they show far more personality and most importantly: Actually act mostly in line with what I had in mind on creation.
It can be a bit more challenging to have them look good, but they actually take initiative. They will do romantic and mean socials on their own. Sims 4 sims never make any real decisions in life, you have to always do it for them, tell them who to flirt with or who to be mean to.
I don't want that. The whims are a lot better in Sims 3 as well, showing you what career they want and it's a lot more based on their traits and aspirations than Sims 4 where very few whims are based on that and most is generic stuff. And you can only save two.
Sims 3 offers more challenging and rewarding whims too.
Was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of good clothing options for men, the amount of facial hair, and of course having body hair helps so much in getting a guy to look masculine. I have this kind of cross between Indiana Jones and James Bond type of guy and he actually acts the part. I send him often to the Gym which is nearby, saves me money and space on fitness equipment and it's so liberating that I can send my sims around all over town without load screens.
While he was exercising, and later ended up coaching one of the townies which seemed very in character and something he did on his own, I had my Witchy girl gather some ingredients and start learning alchemy at the alchemy shop, my future starlet was making friends in the park and the charismatic lucky genius guy was writing a book at home.
I hardly ever sent my sims anywhere in Sims 4 because there's a load screen. It puts an obstacle there, and you might want to keep an eye on what other Sims are doing.
It also gives more a sense of community, seeing the familiar faces of the neighbourhood around.
And the sims themselves just have more charm to me in Sims 3. In Sims 4 they always tend to look and act like vapid douchebags I'd want to punch and it's a serious challenge to make a guy not look feminine in Sims 4.
No body hair, no messy hairstyles, few regular clothes regular men wear, animations being way more feminine..
While Sims 3 has a lot less clothing than Sims 4, it has a lot of quality over quantity there, and makes up for it with so many traits to really help create a character, and the traits have more impact too.
They just feel a lot more like different people to me.
Now I just need to find a mod to get rid of the social group stuff from University, that's the only thing still bothering me with Sim behaviour there. Weird there's no option to turn it off since Sims 3 has a lot of options to customise the game. Like changing lenght of seasons. I prefer spring so made that longer than the other seasons. Also nice to be able to disable specific seasons, to fit the neighbourhood climate.
Well the other thing bothering me is how crazy expensive all Sims 3 content still is. EA has no shame I suppose, only they would charge full price for 10 year old content.
