I Think I Cheated the System! Story Progression with Rotational Play!?!?

So I was getting really annoyed with the lack of story progression for us rotational players that the sims in the other houses just cease to live when you aren't playing them, which also means that they also don't show up for work. I learned this the hard way when I wanted my sim (who is a police detective) to start... lets say a scandalous fling with one of his at-the-time NPC Sim partners at the station. Saucing up the narrative a little, lol. I wanted to be able to have them meet up after hours and hang out at his partner's house too, so I edited the NPC in CAS and moved him into an apartment in the city which then obviously converted him to a played household. And for my OG sim's next work day... his partner didn't show up at the police station. So I tried playing as him instead and sent him to work (which he was now late to), and then my original sim wouldn't show up at the station either. Like... they work at the same dang place... why can't you both work at the same time????

I was pretty bummed that I managed to just mess the whole thing up, but I just let them have their little secret workplace romance out of the workplace. It was no scandalous office romance while on duty, but it worked i guess. Well took me quite a while to think of this, but for the sake of experimentation, I decided to try and use Andrew's Teleport Mod (since you cant call sims to hangout while at work), and forced him to summon to the lot, and what do you know... he showed up. At first he was just acting as a normal sim, with no police interactions, but i sent my sim on patrol and when I came back, I completely expected him to be gone, but he was still there, dressed in his work uniform and everything! He also had the "discuss case theories" interaction. And to my giant suprise, when I send my original sim to work, he he's already there working every day even though I'm playing as a different sim! and I have the "flirt covertly" interaction! So I don't know what triggered this to start happening, but I'm not mad :)

  • I'm not a fan of story progression, but I love seeing my played cops interact with each other at the police station! There are three couples among them and one of those couples tends to make out in the evidence lab <3

I learnt this only late, but here's the "secret": The officers work shifts. Occasionally you'll see one leave and walk to the end of the lot. Then a co-worker will spawn right there and walk to the police station. It's a constant coming and going. Officer also get shuffled around when the lot is loaded (after returning from patrol, crimescene and arrest). This is the reason why you'll hardly ever meet your own sims if you only have two or three in the detective career yourself. The game "needs" seven or so officers to run the police station, but with the shift turnovers those seven in practice become a number closer to twenty.
At any time I always keep ca. 20 handmade police sims (played and unplayed, and at different career levels) in my rotational save and still get randoms now and then (that get deleted on the spot).

Ahhh, i didn't even think of there being a variance in shifts!! I just thought I completely broke his ability to go to work since he stopped showing up for his usual shift when I converted him into a played household. Its odd that he suddenly decided to show up now, but I'm not going to complain haha!

My only problem now is that 80% of the NPC sims are wearing random and ridiculous outfits to the station and I can't seem to fix it, even by editing their career outfit in CAS. I mean, if the chief wants to show up to work in a red, sequined ball gown tho, I'm not here to judge XD
