It's never too late to learn. Maybe their family obligations and/or careers have prevented them from getting that degree they always craved? I think it's a hoot! My seven Sims who went through Uni together (shared a dorm, too) were tormented by an older Sim, who kept leaving obnoxious notes in their rooms. LOL He was pretty rude, too.
