I'd like to see a more earthy, Wicca-like witch, but I'm probably in the minority, especially with respect to the younger folks who grew up with Harry Potter. (Not that I don't love HP, too.) Not so much a lifestate as a trait, but a trait that begins at the toddler age. Those with the trait (knowledge handed down over generations) would learn the witchcraft skill more readily and be able to do more with it. Those without the trait could still learn the skill, but their spells would usually result in failure or disaster.
