I'm not a dev, nor am I trans, so I don't want to speak for anyone, but I think it's pretty clear that this particular item is intended to show support for the trans part of the community more so than those who are gay. (Not, of course, that those are mutually exclusive; obviously people can be either, or both.) Of course gendered bathrooms have nothing to do with being gay, but they do have something to do with gender identity.
