To make friends with dust bunnies, I just have to feed them very regularly (every time it is available) for a while (about a sim day or two) and eventually the other options also unlock and they become happy, and friends, shortly after. It requires you be pretty on top of it though, because if you go too long without feeding it again once the feed option becomes available, it slips back down.
I've never done the aspiration you are trying to do and have no input on the cooking meals option, but I would suggest trying family size, making sure you are using the "cook" and not "gourmet cook" skill, and doing it from the menu on a stove rather than the refrigerator. I assume you were trying it on the refrigerator before. Those are just some of the other variables in getting it to register on other aspirations that I'd try.
Total aside, but it's kind of refreshing when you ask questions like this because at the least we know we can rule out that it is "some mod or another" causing your problem.
