Is 'upgrading' worth it?

Has anyone else noticed that spending thousands for upgrade parts and having a '10 handy' Sim upgrade and even make some things 'unbreakable' does not necessarily seem to be reducing how often their stuff is breaking down?

  • It is worth it less breaking plus had auto soap for sinks or flavorize your stove improve of the meals but don't need to buy parts just next time have break down look threw the pile you able get faster and it free.
  • Upgrade is worth it for some things and not for others. I do not upgrade, If my sims have too much money I look at it as an way to keep that wealth in check and I am also thinking upgrade is an way to make an item better but it still will break down eventually but much later than the base item would that is not upgraded.
  • It is worth it. I just wish we could hire a handyman to upgrade our electronics.
  • I always upgrade everything, its worth it for the shorter shower times alone. But, to be honest, I rarely make things unbreakable. Breaking things will leave SOMETHING left to do for the next sim leveling handiness, at least for the first two levels, when you can't upgrade anything.

That's usually the last thing I upgrade, too. I've had to buy a cheap sink and toilet for later generations to upgrade in order to fulfill the 'nerd brain' aspiration requirements because there was nothing left in the house to upgrade. (I miss upgrading the doorbells, too, as another poster mentioned.)

lately i've been using sprinklers for guaranteed breakdowns. even if the sim isn't growing a garden put a sprinkler out, turn it on, wait for it to break... (and maybe occasionally put a cheap stereo out with it)

@kalaksed If you want to increase handiness I believe you can also buy a workbench and make things? Then as your skill is being increased you're also making items that you can sell that are worth more as your skill increases. Win-win.
  • Depends on if you have/use the Gnomes lot trait or not. They'll fix things for you automatically if you can't be bothered.
  • I definitely think upgrading is worth it. Handiness is one of my favourite skills, and the "nerd brain" aspiration is the one I work on for my sims most frequently :)

My favourite upgrades are the fridge and stove ones, the laundry upgrade that enables you to put flowers in the washing machine, the one that gives you more tv-stations, and the ones that make bath and shower times shorter.

Never had an issue where an upgrade wouldn't work. Just have to be careful not to accidentally "replace" an object that's been upgraded :)
