Issues with document game files appearing as WinRAR in folder

Hi

I just signed out of my game and went to delete the usual files in my documents folder and noticed several files as WinRAR files and I have no clue what i have done or how to fix it without damaging my game? If it matters my WinRAR is paid for not free or a trial version but I have no idea whatsoever how to fix it as this has never happened to me before. Also I only updated to the latest patch today before going into game so am not sure if that could have anything to do with it? there are no mods or cc in my game either at this point as I had just taken them all out to patch up prior to launching the game.

  • Interesting this might help explain it. https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/user-files-explained/

I use 7-zip for my CC and mods. https://www.7-zip.org/

You can have it open with different programs and seems like that was the last program that opened that type of file.

This is the package editor that modders and CC artists use to edit package files like that:

Those are the default files for the game and the avatar cache one is new to help prevent the bug that was happening with CAS making the game crash. Think of caches files like internet cookies, they build up memory over time.
  • Hi @Scobre

Thanks for the links in the end i contacted WinRAR directly and they told me the application had somehow become the/a default program and that it would not harm/change any files but I was also provided with a method to change it back which I am in the process of doing right now. Thank you for answering what I know is/was a strange tech question it is much appreciated :)

No worries and yes those files should work normally and your welcome. Mod community has been very helpful explaining files to me over at modthesims. I only edited one of the text files in that picture to allow five folders deep of mod content. Egwarhammer and Deaderpool are much more tech savvy. Carl and conflict are great Simmer resources if you run into any other tech issues too with explaining files like that. I am glad winrar was able to help. I used to use them during the Sims 2.
