Keeping notes on all sims in your game

Do you keep notes on them all? Or do you limit it to one family or a group of families? What kind of info do you keep track on? Just skills and relations, or DNA, dreams and hobbies etc, too?

I used a speadsheet to keep track on everything, basically one line per sim, and sims grouped per household, and households grouped by hood and world. It's good for my rotational gaming, so I keep notes on every individual. But - I had a hard time keeping track on the community stats, such as which career is not take by anyone, or what aspiration or traits do I hardly ever use? With nearly 200 sims it should be a goal trying out all aspirations, traits and careers. I wish the game would give is some community stats like this, minimum how carerrs spread, maybe even how aspirations spread.

So, I recently scripted my own system, a full fletched Sims Residents Registry :) It will of course only work if I keep updating it, but I think it will be worth doing that extra effort. I can finally check what options are most popular, which are hardly used. I can look up single males or females, and a lot more.

If you want to check it out, I just posted about it on my blog, Simmerville's Sims.

Would you like the game to add a similar built-in system in a future pack/patch?

I tend to just "play the game." What this thread is suggesting is what feels like too much effort for a simple video game. I guess some people have more time to waste. The only "details" I might give are if I save a sim family to the gallery.

For "some people," keeping notes or records IS part of playing the game. If it's not your thing that's fine, but there's no need to denigrate people who do it.

When playing a game, most people do it to waste away free time. I just said that others had more time to waste than I do. Interestingly, I do write my own books. I send them off to be published in small quantities to share with family and friends, but those have no relation to a video game.

I'm definitely not playing this game to waste my freetime. When being dedicated to a game concept for 19 years, it becomes more like a hobby than a game. I always did lots of notes on the side, playing community aspects rather than watching my sims eat and use the toilet. This hobby allows me to develop my creativity in a very inspiring way, by telling stories, making movies, programming and much more. I too write novels and had lots of short stories published in magazines etc, and I'm also doing some acting. Being on film set might give me ideas for my game, and I might find characters and plots in my game for my writing. Sometimes I actually create all main characters in game to develop them before I start writing. It's a hobby and a tool, not a waste :)

PS: I love that there are so many ways to play Sims! Being a short break every now and then, or a time consuming hobby. I guess we all see different activity as wasted freetime, so your input is just as good as mine. In my view watching TV-shows would be a number one waste of freetime, so I hardly ever do that.

Love this idea. I hope you do not mind if I try it. I don't like to use others' things without asking......So I ask. I have been looking for a way to keep track of all my sims as I play by rotation. I too have had my sims change gender and also have affairs when I was not playing that family. Seems they do their own thing if not constantly watched.

Of course you can do something similar. I wish my routine was a software that I could share, but it's only done in my "home made" JavaScript, and the script would be pretty hard for others to maintain.
