Yes, they use it as a regular table. My sim is using it to eat, do university homework, watch tv, chat, and she even put a group meal in the middle of it once.

My sims use it as a regular table. They sit there to eat and watch TV.

You can even "nap" in it. That's great, because those things are so comfy that a lot of people fall asleep in them. ;) (Maybe they should have a "take a nap" whim come up when your sims sit in the kotatsu for too long.

I don't know if you are joking or not, but I bought Snowy escape today, and there is a nap option for the table. So far, my Sims only lowered their head to nap, instead of laying their head down, or lying down.

I just logged onto the game to check this, and my Sims are still able to take naps in the kotatsu. No, they don't lay down on the floor when they do it. They do the sitting up naps, like people do in Japan on the trains or at work during break time. They do sleep when they do it though, and I've seen people nap that way in real life kotatsu too.

(I had to check this, because I was a little worried they removed another Japanese element from the game. It's still in there though.)

Oh wait, you didn't say there isn't a nap option. You said there is. I misread it and was worried they took it out. lol

I misunderstood myself. I thought that when you said "nap" I didn't recognize your context with it.
I see what you mean now, that the nap thing was always there. I got it a few weeks after the release, so I didn't know what options available on the release date. I was just letting you know in case it was a new option, but it seems that it was always an option.
