Well, in many other cultures, the wife doesn't take the husband's last name, for example, this isn't even a thing in Latin America. This has nothing to do with "being too modern" or "a feminist thing", but it is more of an international thing. I have to say that I love that female sims can keep their last names and that I can choose the last names of the kids because it gives you a lot of options! For example, I had Zoe Patel (from the Roomies household) marry a Spanish dude whose name is Pablo Beiroa. He had a kid whose name was Helena Beiroa, and later, Zoe and Pablo had two kids named Marco Patel Beiroa and Aída Patel Beiroa (I put her last name first, since she came first to the sims world). The three kids have different last names, but they don't care at all (Zoe is now stated as Helena's mother) and my five sims family is so happy!
Sorry for the long comment, hehe
Well, to be technical, in the Sims 3, the Sims when the got married didn't automatically take the husband's name. It was whomever initiated the wedding. But I liked the touch that you could change your name at city hall. Just a small thing, but I liked it.
