Life on a farm, how do you manage it, and still leave time for other fun stuff?

So at my point in time, I have two sims managing a farm. The husband is pretty high up in his career that he only goes into work 3 nights a week. They don't know it yet, but they are expecting their first baby. With the aid of MCCC, I learned the baby is a boy. They have a cow, rooster, two hens, and an egg that will be hatching fairly soon, and a garden.

I would love for the family to have time to do other stuff, such as knitting or cross-stitching, but after everything is done, the family is tired and ready to head off to bed. Any suggestion on how I can let this family have more time for other stuff as well?

  • Upgrade the coop and animal shed, for animals in particular. I haven't had a lot of problems with my Sims being too tired/busy with the animals, but probably your best bets are automation mechanics.

Upgraded coops and sheds will feed your animals; sprinklers and hydroponic planters will water your garden; befriended birds and rabbits (and golden chickens) and Patchy the scarecrow will help with garden chores.

Usually my garden is more of a time sink than the animals, and if that is the case for you I seriously suggest abandoning giant crops. Even with gardening help, they can be annoying and high maintenance.

If you're interested in smaller changes for efficiency, I would also upgrade your furniture for better use returns.
  • Get a butler, maid and gardening service.
Farmers usually don't have other day jobs, they are just that, farmers.
Knitting and cross stitching can be done in winter when there should be no gardening.
On the same note, take Sunday off and make it a day of rest.
Automation helps, upgrade everything that can be upgraded and get bots to help.
Splice plants so that you have different fruits on one plant, so there will be less gardening.

Bless you, forgot about bots. Now I have a story-reason for making the kiddo work with droids.

Just make sure to keep them out of the rain and you'll have a nice little farm like out of the Jetsons in no time.
