I usually change them to fit what I imagine my current household to be like, but often forget to add them on lots which don't have lot traits at the start of the game. I have a family in Windenburg which consists of a single father and his kids (and his girlfriend recently). He is working in the culinary career, so I added the Chef's Kitchen trait. One of the kids loves to read, so I gave the lot trait Peace and Quiet. The last trait I added has to do with the story of the family. The children's mother died and they moved to a new home for a fresh start. I added her ghost in manage worlds (just put some ghost from the gallery and changed the appearance a bit to match the kids ones). Then I added the Haunted trait to see if she would come visit them.
I usually get rid immediately from the gremlins trait, as I can't stand all my stuff breaking literally every night. I usually keep Quake Zone and add it to every other lot in the same neighborhood for a more realistic approach.
