Mini rant about Snowy Escape

... Okay, maybe it's not so mini after all... But let me start this off by saying that Snowy Escape provides quite a few features that I've been asking for for a long time, and is one of my favourite EPs. This post is not meant to trash the pack in any way, there are just a few annoying things that I'd like to talk about.

1. Lifestyles
I find them quite confusing. At some point while playing, I usually get a notification that a sim has reached the limit of how much they can work towards a lifestyle in one day, but it doesn't say which one, and looking at the lifestyles overview doesn't always help. I have this sim that I took to the slopes of Mt. Komorebi almost every day, but instead of unlocking the Outdoorsy and Adrenaline Seeker lifestyles I was hoping for, he got Close Knit and Happy Single from not having many friends or a partner, making it seem like lifestyles are determined more by what sims don't do than by what they actually do. I tried to cheat Happy Single away, and it disappeared from the simology panel, but is still marked as active in the lifestyles overview, no other lifestyles have been building up since then and I'm afraid that this sim is broken now.

2. Emotionally mindful
Arguably the most annoying new feature is that my sims constantly get into an emotionally mindful state from doing normal everyday activities, providing a very strong "fine" moodlet that overrides every other emotion I may have been working on. The game probably expects me to be happy about that because all I have to do now is go hiking in Mt. Komorebi to become even more mindful and choose any emotion I want, but there's no time for that when my sim has to be at work in half an hour! The father of my wannabe adrenaline seeker is a painter who constantly gets that moodlet from painting, making it nearly impossible to paint emotionally.

3. Rock climbing
This skill gets credit for even existing separately, because knowing TS4's tendency to always take the easy way out, it wouldn't have surprised me to see rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding lumped together in one new winter sports skill. However, it's very tedious. The mountain expedition advises sims to bring some experience with rock climbing, level 6 at least - fair enough. So I made my sims climb up and down that tiny wall by the hiking trail a million times, but their skill would only go up at a snail's pace, still stuck at level 4 or so till this day. I ended up "cheating" by taking on the expedition with a witch and a vampire who could just teleport past any walls they couldn't climb, but the journey wasn't very eventful as a result. You know, with skiing and snowboarding, it's at least fun to watch them do it, but climbing gets old fast, so if anybody has any tips on how to build that skill more efficiently, I'm all ears.

4. Winter sports, children and pets
This is another situation like with candle-making in Eco Lifestyle, where children can technically engage in the activity, but without building the corresponding skill, so they're forever stuck with the most basic candle or, in this case, the easiest slope. I mean... The animations are there, the clothes are there, the equipment is there in the form of little snowboards and skis for smaller sims, so why not let them build the skills, too, even if they have to max their own motor skill first? Another thing that annoys me is that you can take dogs on a hike, but not cats, just adding to the endless list of reasons why dogs in this game are great and cats are useless. And it would have been nice if you could go sledding with them, too.

As I said, I still love Snowy Escape, but I think we're definitely past the flirting phase by now, the butterflies are gone and I can see the flaws in this relationship. Feel free to share your own gripes, or help me out with mine if you can!

4 lifestyle points are gained in the wrong way. My doctor is a people person because he has to talk to patients on his job? He is not friendly. He’s just doing his job. That doesn’t make him a people person.

I want the sims team to add the new relationship “professional relation” to avoid getting a lot of random friends (and to avoid getting the “people person” lifestyle from your career).

    Professional relations
*All relations at work (e.g. your colleagues, or the relations with your patients if you´re a doctor) or with working sims (e.g. the barista / food stand employee) will list as a “professional relation” (work as a regular relationship but you will not become friend with them)
*Click on a sim in your relationship panel and choose “Get to know IRL” to start a “real” (friendly) relationship

And also family relations. Almost all my sims are people person because they have large families...

YES! Mine too! The people person / Close knit lifestyle should only count friends OUTSIDE the family.

Lifestyles could definitely use some tweaking, because they seem to be bugged as well. I thought you could only have three active at the same time, but my vampire has four.

(I didn't use any cheats or SE-related mods to get this.)
Also, I find it sad that there aren't any lifestyles related to art, most of them are just about how much you move and how many people you know.

But speaking of vampires, they're supposed to be immune to temperatures, yet apparently Yukimatsu is so cold that even my vampire turned white during a hike, and the game warned me that he was in danger of freezing to death. Not that I'm complaining (much)... At least his outfits in the cold weather category aren't completely useless now.

As an aside, I also have a store in my games that sells Nimble Mind potions if I want something to go faster. I think there is a scientist potion that does the same thing. It can be very useful!

Thanks for the suggestion! I have lots of witches in my game, and scientists as well, but somehow I always forget that those skill potions exist...
  • Child Skills are the most annoying. I even think that it is better without them. Snowboarding is not just what affects it but all of them. Take a look at the Singing skill. I have my child sim practice it when CL came out however since it was not available until you maxed out the creativity skill....

My Child sim are not improving even when practicing for Weeks because the creative skill is not yet raised to level 10. It does not make sense. We can't even have child prodigies playing piano especially at normal lifespan because of the requirement to max out the child skill first. A skill that imo aside from new renamed interactions are nothing more.

  • I recently started paying attention to eco-friendly products in the game and was really surprised that the Snowy Escape pack had NO eco-friendly products! Seriously the clay tile roofs, bamboo & cedar fencing, not even the tatami mat flooring was eco-friendly! Since this pack came after eco-lifestyle why is none of it eco-friendly?!

I agree and can add a few things to your rant on snowy escape.
1 the vending machines are always broken. That is not cute. It’s annoying and looks glitchy
2 toddlers are constantly abandoned on the slope. There is no way to feed a toddler once you take one with you. Once again bad design. Why can I purchase a meal for a toddler once in snowy escape? The meal stands close too quickly and I am stuck with garbage vending machines. That brings me back to point 1
3 sentiments have no context. Half the time I don’t know why they have one. I’d like a notification on that. Also, I got furious sentiment after neighborhood brawl. My sims laughed and hugged and got a furious sentiment. Why? So no animation indicator of sentiment nor a notification on why the sentiments are assigned. It’s garbage and useless. Who’s the genius behind this addition to the game?
4 lifestyle points are gained in the wrong way. My doctor is a people person because he has to talk to patients on his job? He is not friendly. He’s just doing his job. That doesn’t make him a people person.
5 what is the purpose of snow bros? I got excited about that and quickly disappointed. The only thing they can do together is build a snow man. They could have done that before snowy escape. When I tried to get them to snowboard or ski together repeatedly, the “snow bro” does it one time and goes away. Then I can’t find them. (Sim scattering like roaches is a constant issue) The continuous action gets termed all the time. Especially with other sim and toddlers resulting in abandoning toddlers on slopes. Actually if you have multi sim household all actions you assign get canceled all the time as soon as you switch between sims and often even when you are looking at them. It’s not free will. It’s just frustrating. Yes I can tone it down, but then they don’t do anything on their own. Ughh can it be just toned down a bit. While they are at it can sims creators fix the constant movement. I get you can multitask but do they have to get up, sit down, move two steps, sit down, get up and talk to everyone all the time.
6 climbing is a fantastic idea. I don’t mind so much the slow progression. I got to lvl 5 no problem I think this game lacks challenges in general so a bit of difficulty is much appreciated, but to go on an expedition with another sim they need the skill as well and this game has no story progression so they are not building the skill together. I have to play with each sim in turn to get the skill. Ughhh. There is no option to practice together, so they can get the skill together. Yeah you can create a club and make climbing a feature, but they are still not building the skill together. It’s just such a terrible, not thought out design.
7 my problem with sims 4 in general and not so much with snowy escape is lack of drama and long term effect. Sims are 90% of the time happy and now mindful (which is the same as happy). Reputations are very superficial and have no game impact. Relationships are superficial and have no game play impact. Traits are superficial and have no game play impact. Memories are tedious and have no game impact. Sentiments are confusing and have no game impact (or very little). Animations and autonomy is poorly designed. There is no dramatic, interesting animations. No relationship come with interactions that are fun to watch or play (and if they made one it repeats like a broken record). The game made everything so easy and cut so many animations. Your sim gets either things spawning in inventory or getting them in a computer. Which is simply boring. Lifestyle are like everything else just a profile blurb. My evil, klepto mob boss who watched his mother burn to death and has an awful reputation is the same clone as my good, candle maker who wants to save the environment. They make friends the same way, enjoy the same things, hate the same things and are 90% happy. No attractions, likes, dislikes, distinctive animations, interesting interactions, long term impacts, no drama, no challenge. In terms of game play this game is bad. Build mode is fantastic. Game play is just awful. Autonomy is out of control. Sims constantly quit on assigned task and do task that make no sense. Push ups during weddings in the middle of watching a ceremony ? Why isn’t that option excluded? Thinking of family member all the effing time. Changing into bathing suits to use the pool, eating at the pool. The usage of pool is soooo annoying I stopped building pools. Changing into workout close to play basketball in the middle of winter and not changing back after stopping to play basketball results in sims constantly freezing to death. Simple fix. Either stop making them change or make them change back after done. They use pools even if access is blocked. Things spawning in inventory out of thin air. For a “life simulation” game they butchered life.

Bravo! You said what needed to be sad. Espacially the part about autonomy...

You litterally have to babysitt your sim and it doesnt matter if aunotomy setting is off/on. If you play with more then 2 Sims... it gets chaotic

I also thought about at least giving us competitions events, if you make Skills one of your main key features. Because as it stands now it wouldnt matter if we just got a snowboard pipeline and the hidden snowboarding skill where you see three tricks instead of 10tricks Even the make money out of it is not that special. One just goes into a rabbithole and the other one doesnt really make a difference. Its like if you would make money from hacking because you have the programming skill.

Unlocking new items like clothes. Why not make this accessible via a store and give us new gameplay unlockable...

Lvl 4 - you can teach kids how to snowboard on the bunny slopes with new animations.

lvl 5 you can now enter active competitions... or at least rabbithole... Better then nothing.

Rock climbing feels like a hike and it is really off that the sims dont go through this together. Like wait for the sim, climb the wall together....
you idiot. If my sim has to rest, you should rest too instead of just waiting at the thing that teleports you to the next part.

You can get your sim in a rock climbing club and they skill faster in a club meeting.

The finally have a map I like and they added Yamachan the terrorist.

Not sure how I feel about the other stuff since I am usually busy trapping and killing Yamachan.

HAHA! Poor Yamachan! :D I think you can disable Yamachan by clicking on the Yamachan statue in the Wakaba area. But the idea with skiing / snowboarding competitions is reallt great! I hope they can add in this later on!

I still wish that Snowy Escape was more like a Swiss Alps World. :'(
