I tend to leave the mentoring of music for when my sim becomes a parent, then they teach their kid the piano or violin (depending on which, or both, they themselves have mastered.) Most of my sims master the violin pretty quickly because mentoring a kid in it is also a great way to raise Parenting skill.
I originally did that with my Rock Star. He gave his eldest, a son, a nice child's violin when he aged up from Toddler. Then he mentored him on the piano. Erik is proficient on guitar, violin and piano. I just got him a cc drum kit. Already he's nearly capped out on that, too. Musical Genius, for a certainty.
