I had this same problem. My sims son was about to be an elder with his dad. But if the age bar is already sparkling and it's been doing it for awhile, you can fix it. My settings are set to a long life, but in order to kill the dad of natural causes I changed the life span to "normal" and hit play. Blam he was dead, then just went back to my settings as he was still dying and changed it back to long. Problem solved without hurting him!
