Same as you OP. I've had two generations with pets now and every time, they run away because they get neglected.
The toddlers imitate the dog but never interact with him, the adults will SOMETIMES talk to a dog if he's here when they're eating or something, but that's pretty much it. It didn't matter if they didn't have kids before, they'd still never go out of their way to talk to the dog.
It's extremely sad. I wonder if having a big house with a lot of fun things to do has anything to do with that, to be honest.
