You assign them an umbrella once.
Then they have it, take it out automatically and put it in their inventory automatically.
YOU NEVER have to do it again. It's fully automatic. Out when wet (or sunny for vampires), automatically fold it an put it away when it stops raining.
Unless you delete it from their inventory of course; or have a mod that messes with it, of course.
