Don't get discouraged by the Sims community. There are good eggs in it especially on Twitch. Maxis at Play I would recommend because nice to get to know the Gurus when they aren't just streaming the Sims. BobSquad is amazing if you need to find good friends that don't care about which Sims game you enjoy.

Sorry for all the links, but yes best advice I can give is there is no wrong way to play. Don't feel pressured to get all the packs especially if finances are tight. Join giveaways if you can and wait for sales. A good starter pack I would suggest is Parenthood because it makes teens so much more fun to play.
