I generally build my Sims their home and then use cheats to get them in. Over time, they might decorate it better than I started it out. I tend to grow bored of wall color, wall paper or tile on the floor and spend an hour or so just redoing. Sometimes I'll even remodel the kitchen pulling out the cabinets, du jour, and replacing them giving it a whole new look.
