No trash talk option under mean?

You can (easier) if you've had a bad interaction, I had the option to call sims mother a llama and to criticise his bedroom performance

Do you have Other Sims... interaction? Trash talk and ask to break up is under that interaction.

Mean interactions should have Other Sims... interaction that includes this if you have Get Together ep. Sorry for not clarifying that.
The Other Sims... option should be on the right after you click on Mean category. You cannot do trash talk to a sim in your household.

In conclusion: The reason @Keffers cannot have sim trash talk is because the sim they want to do that to is in the same household. Your sim can trash talk to the target about the sim in the household and it'll have same effect: decreased relationship between two other sims.

So silly you can't "trash talk" with a friend just because youre in the same household.

My sim caught her husband being flirty with grimy but when I went to get him to apologise (he has high charisma skill) it never came up... she had all sorts of interactions (loving the implying mother is a llama)

Have you had your sim's hubby use smooth apology on her?

I think the pet's be mean to interaction has pretty much replaced the trash talk sims on the lot.
