I'd say I'm somewhere between the dollhouse and simulation poles. I want to control my active Sim, so I decide if and when they dance and wash their hands. I'll stop other members of the active household from doing wacky random actions most of the time. If that's playing dollhouse, then so be it.
I don't mind other Sims doing their own things. If they'd rather Troll Teh Forums or drink gallons of water than anything else, that's all good.

Instead of turning them into mindless zombies, if it's too much I may put stuff like fitness equipment or the woodworking thingy in a room that can lock a door to keep out out a certain character (or characters). Or remove something into household inventory. (Though even that I try not to do). With security settings on the computer, I actually use that alot! For example, in Sulani, the Kealoha household, only Duane is allowed to use the computer. Also they have no TV. ;)
