I mean that tradition was because of forced marriages and the bride covered her face to show obedience and the groom would lift the veil after they get married because that would be the first time he sees the bride and technically can't change his mind because they both said "I do" and officially became married.
Where I come from it represents purity and modesty and can protect from dark spirits. No forcing involved. A lot coverings through history (head,face,body etc) were a sign of respect and modesty. Even the end of the sari in South Asia is used to cover ones hair when in the presence of strangers or certain people. No one ever forced me to do it. I did it to remain modest and show my respects. The veil is the same concept.
All over the world someone is forced into something that's just the sad reality. But I don't want the value of these things and modesty to be diminished or looked upon with disdain because of what someone wrongfully chooses to force.
