Here's a hack I've found useful, if you own Get Together. If you start up a new club, you can use the club system club requirements to quickly find sims in the save that have qualities your sim wants in a friend or SO. For example, if you want to hang out with someone who's unmarried, young adult, a competent dancer and loves the outdoors, you can select those four criteria. Then you click on one of the vacancies in the club and it will show you a list of all the single young adults in the save who can dance and love the outdoors. Takes the trial and error out of getting to know townies.
