The pets don't look exactly like their mom or dad either...they get a mix of features from each...for example, they may get their ears from their mom and their tail from the dad.
Yeah, I get that some of the features can mix, which is good. Unrealistic expectation though? I'm guessing you didn't play previous installments of Sims Pets, because in the Sims 3 Pets you could have crazy colored/patterned parents and the offspring would be a mixture. It was fun not knowing exactly what their coats would look like. So they have made this possible before, however maybe it's harder for them to do with Sims 4? I get that it's not true to life, but this is a game and it was just one of my favorite parts of the Pets expansion previously.
