Point of thermostat?

I have not tried to set it on COLD, so I don't know if there's a difference, but my sims pay no attention to the difference between "normal" and "hot". Same clothes, same behavior, same moodlets?

What's the point with it?

Speaking about badly documented things... It took me 10 minutes of googling to figure out how to get umbrellas. One would think they could have done it like the kanes in Sims 3, or like the free earbuds for Sims 4.

Sims will use umbrellas automatically, even our active sims. The stand is mainly for choosing the design. As for the thermostat, our sims can also freeze if you turn it to cold while it's cold out and overheat if you turn up the heat on a hot day.

Nope. None of my sims used umbrellas until I manually made them choose an umbrella.

Either a bug or maybe all sims don't do it? At first my sim didn't have one, but I waited and eventually she started using one. Now all of my sims do whether I purchase a stand or not.
  • first of all, your rooms need to be covered from all sides you need to have siling to! then put termostat in the midle room of your house(is the best,to be covered all house with one termostat) and turn heeet on or turn cooling on depends on season you having at the time. And then your sims geting modlet for central heating in winter, for summer i dont know yet becouse i did not play yet summer, winter is my first season and still is in my game...

I only put it on when it's either freezing outside or when it's a heatwave.

I love having the thermostat because it adds realism. This game needed some challenge and this added to it. It is best utilized when you have a heatwave or it's freezing. I notice the difference because it automatically eliminates the buffs showing the sim is too cold or hot when they enter. If you use the heat/cold protection traits, however, the thermostat isn't necessarily needed. I love that the developers gave us more options for a challenge. They are actually listening to us! :)
  • I don't get what the confusion is about the thermostat. I am reading the stuff in bits and pieces but what do people mean when they say they need to program it? When it's hot you put it on cold and when it's cold you put it on hot. IRL in my house growing up I had to turn it one way for heat and the other for cooling.
  • For me the only sims that get uncomfortable moodlets when the thermostat is off and there is a heatwave of it's freezing outside are toddlers and kids (and that's why I put one on my houses), the get pretty sad too, but from teen to elsers they seem to be ok with it. They spend more time in the living room tho, where the fireplace is!
  • I like how it raises bills for my household. I've only played cold seasons so far (started in fall and am now in early spring) and have kept it constantly on heat. It's raised my bills from somewhere in the hundreds of simoleons to closer to 2000 simoleons, which is cool because it makes it more of a challenge for my sims to pay for. I'd understand, though, how this would be an issue with people who have bills around 10000 change to 40000. I guess the fix for that would just be to add a fireplace and a pool?
  • I don't even need to get the frugal trait. I downloaded a mod a long time ago that lowers the bills to more realistic values. The house my sims own is currently very large and their bills with the thermostat have come up to about 7k - but I don't consider that much since the household has a crap ton of money. But the trait does help.

So far with the thermostat it seems like a nice feature to me. In winter my sims were getting an uncomfortable moodlet complaining that it was cold so I turned the setting to 'warmer' and they would every once in awhile get a nice little +1 to their mood from the central heat.

For summer my sims haven't complained about the heat indoors even if there is a heatwave outside, but I decided to turn on the 'cooler' option anyway and they get the same +1 moodlet, only the description changes to how much they appreciate the cool air of central AC. I think its pretty cool and my bills are fine.

By the way as far as I know you don't need to have your thermostat placed in a particular spot in your home. Just place it anywhere and it works. Mine is all the way at the right end of my house (and the house is huge) and it covers every single room on the lot, including the greenhouse out in the back. There hasn't been a room where they don't have the moodlet. If you have a room that is missing sections of walls then obviously you have a problem there with it not working correctly. It was the most simplest settings too. Warmer, cooler, and off. Depending on the seasons and the weather you pick any of them. Overall I think the thermostat is a nice addition to the game and reminds me a bit of reality.
