I've been playing for years but never played premade households until a month ago when I accidentally deleted my save(rip). I suddenly had the urge to play with the premades and in the process, I'm learning about Sims lore as well (curious for the upcoming lore update the gurus have promised).
Anyway, I would love to hear about how others are playing with premades in their games. I know there's been a few threads on this topic over the years but this is one of those discussions that will always have endless answers!
To start off, I'm a rotational player and I've made tweaks to the premades regarding traits, appearances, and clothing. I usually have an outline in my head of what kind of life my sims will lead. I've been looking at the Sims wiki for inspiration but I don't always follow the lore.
I started with the Landgrabbs but Nancy and Geoff haven't disowned Johnny Zest yet. Their marriage is also stable(...for now) and they both went to uni. I actually wasn't planning to send Nancy but she got a pop-up event asking if she would become a whistleblower and I chose yes, leading her to get fired from her secret agent career. Figured she should go back to school and then become a secret agent again...but now she wants revenge! So she got a degree in villainy and became a double agent.
Next were the Goths. Decided to make Mortimer the Edgar Allen Poe of the sims world and he has started to gain traction for works like "The Tell-Tale Plumbob" and "The Fall of the House of Crumplebottom". The family is friendly with the Landgrabbs but Bella has a bit of a rivalry going on with Nancy. Cassandra sells depressing paintings on Plopsy and Alexander doesn't really have a thing yet I'm afraid.
I've moved on to the Caliente household (along with Don Lothario) and Judith Ward but their storylines are still in their infancy. So this is where I'm at so far!
I have more premades in my game than I want to admit. Basically I create ,y own sims and stories, and playing 100+ households on rotation doesn't leave a lot of time for the premades. I often use them to get a family going, then focus more on their offspring, and some premades are not very actively played. For the Landgraabs, Crumplebottoms, Fyres, Altos, Elderberry, Ward and Hoapili I made sort of detailed backstories. My full household index can be found on my website. Individual bio pages have link to their family tree.
I have a specific save in which I play rotationally with premades and other Maxis made Sims that I've added into the world. I'm not into the lore, I just play the way I want to. Bella Goth has an affair with Don Lothario and had a daughter with him, Mortimer thinks she's his child. Bob and Eliza Pancakes had twin daughters and other one of them is transgender. Sergio Romeo came out of the closet when he fell in love with Gunther Munch and he broke up with Siobhan Fyres. Sergio and Gunther are living together now and Gunther wants to adopt a child but Sergio hates children.
I also play with just Goths on another save. I'm planning to make Alexander a powerfull spellcaster when he grows up.
I had a save with Don Lothario who had children with most of the females, but the game culled the majority of them, so I ended up deleting it. I continued playing with some of his children in another save, but I deleted it also later.
Another way I use premades is that I use them as spouses for my own Sims sometimes. My favorite Sim is married to Summer Holiday and their daughter is married to Alexander Goth. My not so berry challenge mint Sim is married to Joaquin Le Chien. Some other Sims of mine are married with Zoe Patel, Johnny Zest and Don Lothario, one is also having an affair with Bob Pancakes.
I plan to play all households at some point (hopefully) and in detail this is pretty much whats up in my save  The Book of Shallow Stories its a lot so I don't go explaining in full length obviously
but basically I just try to snoop around for any hint of story anywhere with new ones  like ''what do they like, what do they have in their room, what is my own impression of them, do they have some image for lot of simmers, what does it say in descriptions'' etc.
for the old games lore I do like to keep some of it but I also like to mix it a little
for example with Landgraabs I've decided Johnny Zest is actually the good boy Malcolm from sims 3 (since he has similar traits and all and is disowned from some Landgraabs line so why not that one)
and the evil Malcolm they added is the console Malcolm from the ps2 games = would explain the mess up of 2 Malcolm and it also would explain why its evil Malcolm again
due to this I've given evil Malcolm Mimi and Dudley Landgraab for his children in some console games they were red heads and i think there was blonde versions too but I liked how them being redheads made sense in what i had played so far
I mean including Eliza Pancakes to Landgraab story is definitely not going by official story but its fun so
for goths I plan to go somewhat by the ts2 setting at first (bella disappears, don and cassandra about to marry etc) but I want to dig deeper into what happens afterwards and tie it in with ts 4 thats trying to not be tied to it >:)
for example I always had theory that the original Bella Goth in ts4 isn't actually Bella but clone of her cause I just couldn't accept that version as Bella I remember
and yeah i did give them mighty amount of makeovers, likes and dislikes etc. based on my own impressions of what they're like and I like to add premades /lore from console games and ts1/2 in any way I can so I am always looking for opportunities to do that
ts3... well I do feel like the lore gets kind of too complicated there so i follow where it makes sense considering other things i have going on but otherwise not really
anyway this is why I am very spooked when they say they're gonna update the lore cause I got it all set already and : I I'd rather not change it all this far in
I have one save where they all get played, which needs to be updated for new packs. It's a HUGE rotation save since I've also added in some of the Maxis sims from the gallery - the Beakers et al. May need to see if there are any I missed for any empty lots lol.
I have played the same save since 2015, so most premades are gone by now. I like playing them from time to time and they also become part of the stories I write.
Evie Delgato also has a small part in Alluring Academics mini series, but it's been pretty small (for now). Vlad and Diego Lobo have made it to my stories too, but not main parts. I also have a lot of families who are related to classic premades like Bob & Eliza, Mortimer & Bella, Summer & Travis, Don.
Forgot to mention that they also often marry into my family lines - the single ones at least. The Thorpes married in Alexander Goth, Lucas Munch, and Olive Tinker so far. Of course, some now have MCCC children, so they're fair game too lol.
While I have had a number of the pre-mades marry into my households, the last time I actually played the pre-made households was back in Sims 2 when I followed the various storylines. I always mean to go back to the various pre-made households on a new game and play them, but never seem to get round to it. I like my legacy challenge games too much.
For the longest time I wasn't interested in the premades. Then Freetime released, I wanted to play in the new neighborhood, so I moved all the Desiderata Valley premades out of their nice homes and into barrack-like houses at the edge of town. While I slowly introduced my own sims over the next days, I felt bad about my decision, because it reflected a real life issue: The wealthy newcomers can afford the good houses, rent rises and the locals are forced to move to the outskirts and into grey concrete apartment blocks.
So I started playing the Desiderata sims, then the Bluewater sims and the downtownies along with my own characters. To this day mixing Maxis sims with my own is what keeps them interesting for me, because depending on who the same premades interact with, they will express different sides of themselves.
In Sims 4 I have a bunch of premades including sims from trailers that I love to pieces and have saved to my library to protect them from any lore or style rebrand. They may not always get played, but I love seeing them in the background in all of my saves. The vast majority, however, I either ignore or delete. One thing I noticed is that ever since Eco Lifestyle premades have it harder to win me over. I feel I already have a large and varied enough cast and so any newcomer has to stand out particularly well.
