I made a very successful woodworking store, but I waited until my Sim had level 10 handiness and the Marketable trait, which increased the sales price a lot. I also had him study the schematic for the camping statue at Granite Falls, which he's been able to sell for up to 4000 simoleons (over 1000% profit before store markup).
I kept profits high by restocking from inventory rather than using the store's restocking feature, having one Sim craft while the other tended to customers, and hiring no employees. Besides the camping statue, bathtubs and dining tables sell for the most money.
