Question about ghosts using up household slots

I've read that if you literally add a ghost to your household, it takes one of the 8 slots, but if someone dies on your lot and becomes a ghost, does that also consume one of the 8 slots?

I'm wondering because I'm doing the 100-baby challenge and every slot is precious. If an accidental ghost is added, that's bad, so I need to know if allowing elders to visit the house is a potential hazard. It's nice when one of the oldest kids comes to visit, but I'd rather not take chances.

  • The only time a ghost will take up a slot is if they are a playable ghost. So if you have a sim die, and their ghost shows up from time to like they do it won't take up the 8 sim limit slot. The reason is when a sim dies, they will be moved to the hidden household section of the game.
  • You can let them visit. If anyone dies on your lot there will be a gravestone/urn. They won't be added to your household. Even if they live in your household they will be removed from it and you will have a gravestone. In about 3 days the ghost will come out at 11 or midnight.. and if you have a high enough friendship you can invite them to your household ... if you invite them to live with you that's when they get a household slot.
When a non playable ghost visits if the tombstone is on your lot they might break stuff.. so you might want to release the spirit if you never want to see them again, or you might want to put the tombstone in your inventory and carry it to a lot that you can build on (community lot) and make a little cemetery. You can even store them in your inventory basically indefinitely.
  • Thank you, to both of you! This is good information and very helpful, exactly what I needed to know! :)

  • Edit: *** Update: False alarm, see my post a few down from here ***

    Following up on this...

I think that the ghosts of people who die on my lot will never visit me if my household is full. I've had three deaths now on my lot, their urns have all been on display for a fair bit of time, and yet I haven't had a single visit from any of them. I definitely haven't released their spirits to the netherworld, either.

I'm guessing maybe they're considered "locals" and thus have to use one of the 8 household slots while making an appearance...?

I dunno, either that or I've just had a really bad run of RNG. I know from other playthroughs that they tend to show up a lot more frequently than this.
  • I'm planning on having a little mausoleum full of all the deaths in this game and would also like a confirmation for this, because I just know that the fire sim and cowplant one are going to give me hell and maybe preventing them from rising would be better for my mental health.

I believe this is just bad RNG
I don't think they count as part of the household, but instead a "visitor" because even though you have 8 sims in your household you can invite more over. Although I don't know how many sims can be on one lot without mods, but I'm guessing around 12 due to the amount of sims I see at nightclubs or DJ parties.

I believe you have to mourn at the gravestone or urn a bit for the ghost to come out. Might be good to double check the details.
  • Sorry to hear you are having a problem with ghosts not visiting @Felice_Enellen ... they always came to visit me after several days. I think it was usually about 3 days. I killed off a number of sims on purpose to collect different ghost death types. I haven't tried to move in a ghost for a few a years though so not sure if anything has been tweaked with the game.
You might be right in that they might not visit if your household is full... I don't play with 8 sim households normally so I just don't know what to tell you in those circumstances. Hopefully someone that plays larger households could give some advice on that.
Another thing do you leave your lot or mostly stay on it? I know when I was trying to move ghosts in my sims were basically home all the time.
  • *** UPDATE ***

Regarding this concern I had above:

I'm glad to report that, as of just now, a ghost finally did show up!

So, false alarm! I guess it really was just a bad run of RNG...

Thanks for everyone's concern, I'm glad for all our sake that it hasn't turned out to be a bug. :)
  • PS: She's blue in the pic, but don't worry, I went down and cheered her up. :)

That's basically what I'm doing, but only for those of my 100 babies who die of old age before I finish.

As mentioned, this doesn't seem to be doing what I thought it was, so if you were hoping to avoid those troublesome ghosts you mentioned, I guess this isn't going to do the trick.

If nothing else, walling them off in a sub-sub-basement might do it... >:)
