In Sims 2 you had to send your teen off to University before they aged up to the next life stage which at the time they went from Teen to Adult. It was when they were in college did they have the Young Adult life stage.
In Sims 3 you could send your sim to University once they reached the Young Adult life stage, and also in Sims 3, you could also send your adult and elder sims to college as well. I'm just speculating here, but I have a feeling that it will be the same in Sims 4 as it was in Sims 3.
Sims 2 actually had Universities where Sims 3 had the School of Lifelong learning which allowed Ya-Elder to go to school. So it all depends on which kind of colleges these are. Sims 2 the Sims had to stay at school for all 4 years to graduate with degrees - if they left school they went to adult age and could not come back as those colleges were not life long learning colleges. The life long learning only had up to two weeks at school then they left - and could come back a week or two weeks at a time until they got their degrees.
So does it all depends on what kind of colleges they are supposed to be? I preferred staying the 8 semesters like Sims 2 though. I hated leaving every two weeks and no Greek houses - so i kept having to change dorms every two weeks if some other Sims took my Sims dorm room before they could get back. That was a pain. I also liked the first one had the cafeterias in each dorm - but the Sims 3 version we had to make our own food. I like the cafeteria option better. It was like the 4 year college I went to - where as Sims 3 version felt foreign to me. Granted the college of life long learning is cool if you have an older sims going back to finish or get new degrees. I also did that in real life but I never got to stay on campus. Adults and elders did not qualify in real life to live on campus or use dorms. We went back and forth to the college for lectures and things like that but we traveled from our homes. There was no living on campus anywhere if you were older and had families. So to have dorm living in Sims 3 was weird to me. I just thought perhaps it was like that in other countries so it was added to the game or that things had changed since I had last gone to college.
