I think almost all game companies are like that now. My guess would be to advertise all their other games. Although it is more efficient if you have multiple accounts with different games... now you only need one. Plus you can stay in contact with friends from different games. I mostly just Sim so it doesn't do me much good but I could see the benefits.
BTW I figured out my original question... I had to set my privacy settings to "Everyone".
