Quick question about feeding the cow plant

I thought I read here someplace that your cow plant will die if it is not fed twice a day. My plant is full grown now, but refuses to eat when I offer the little package. I pet it and play with it, but it always shakes its head when food is offered. I don't want the little (well, kinda huge) guy to die. How do I feed it?

I've learned that you can only feed them every 6 hours. Also, by the time they stick out the cake, they are already starving to death so watch closely and get a sim there to feed it asap if you get the cake. Otherwise your cow plant goes the way all of mine have done and turns into a cow plant skeleton. :/
