Rags to Riches. A Mechanic for Selling?

Just wondering what you guys do with your rags-to-riches (i.e. no money, not a traditional job) Sims?
Do you "just" sell flowers, fossils and the like direct from their inventories or do you have a more "realistic" mechanic? I'm trying blogging again and my alien has been stranded on Earth (Sim Nation) by a wormhole gate accident. It would be strange for her to have money, even it if is (legitimately by game mechanics) generated by gathering collectables.

  • If you have a sales table you can sell your items for more money than you'd get from selling from inventory. If you find items in the dumpster then you can sell directly from the inventory as they sell for full catalogue price.
  • I'd forgotten the sales table, thanks @crocobaura
I might be able to work it into my story, somehow. Even if I have to sell directly out of the inventory in order to afford the table initially.
  • Oh man, my Rags to Riches Sims do much more than just collect, harvest/garden and fish to make a living. Here are a few things they've done:

    1. Painting
    2. Sales Table (using their own or at the Flea Market)
    3. Retail Store/Bakery/Art Gallery - I especially like doing a bakery or other food because they can just get the Lice Cold Freezer and sell all food/baked goods from that on a retail lot if they don't want to directly deal with customers and the food lasts longer. By the way, in case you didn't know, Sims can use a yard sale table as a 'fridge.' I love to have my R2R Sims pack festival food or townie leftovers into sack lunches and then put them in the yard sale inventory. They last for days that way and it's much cheaper than a full size or mini fridge. It's also good to store any plates of food they might grill themselves in parks too.
    4. Hacking (under Programming)
    5. Photography
    6. Sing and/or play an instrument for tips
    7. Tell jokes using a microphone
    8. Breed frogs
    9. Knitting (Plopsy - good for anything your Sim can make really)
    10. Woodworking table
    11. Dumpster Diving
    12. Fizzy Juice
    13. Fabrication
    14. Candle Making
    15. Writing Books
    16. Writing Songs
    17. Flower Arranging
    18. Dog/Cat treats

I'm sure there's more, those are just a few ideas off the top of my head. Anything 'made' or stolen (kleptos) that would normally be sold from the inventory is sold using the sales table or by saving up doing something else first to get simoleans and then opening a retail store. That includes mounting any fish caught, keeping bred frogs, dog treats, herbal remedies, honey, etc.
  • The odd jobs are great if your sim is not doing the usual 9-5 job :)
  • I always find a job first, I try to fill all my needs on community lots, e.g. I play chess in the park, I wash at the gym etc. I also go to part-time work, and when I buy a sell table, I do garage sales.
  • When I first started out with a Sim with no money, he would hang out in the museum. He'd sleep on the couches and "grab chips" for free whenever the bartender wasn't around.
  • Get yourself a tent, a cooler, some camp furniture and a sales table and make the road your home.

What I always did was gather a bunch of stuff, wait for the flea market to happen and then sell stuff there. There is one, maybe two, table(s) you can use to sell wares. I wouldnt increase the price because it didnt seem realistic to me to have it marked up 300% and then use that money to buy a selling table if they made enough.
  • Busking. Sometimes he moves in with a friend, then a girlfriend, then another girlfriend.
It’s one way to stay alive and still make money. Will he ever be rich? Depends on who he lives with. :D

I always say make use of those guitar skills and make use of your friends.
