Yeah, my mother grew up on an actual farm with no indoor plumbing, hardly any money, and no private phone line. They had an outhouse and a pan under the bed to pee in. Not very glamorous!
With that said, I love the cottage living fantasy though. :)
It's not even that; as long as you're actually aware that the life you are able to live (with phones, cars, probably a bus line, wifi / 4 or 5G coverage, modern healthcare and the option of not 100% rely on what you can scrape together (aka modern grocery stores) I'm fine with that. That's what my parents are doing; they are pensioners now but they spent 12 years going for a 1 hour commute to Stockholm every day keeping their old day jobs and thought it was worth it getting away from the big city.
It's the people who genuinely think the way they are living now is the good old days that annoy the Brent Heckling out of me.
