I had the same issue and now having fun again playing with Mods I'm also a family player:
Slice of life is great but I remove the sickness system and menstrual system. The event invites and emotions makes it more interesting and funner to me. Not sure if I'm allowed to mention that one tho. Took me a while to like it as I like my game a vanilla as possible. Kawaiistacie also has various mods I use (explore mod, better education bundle (preschool better homework and schools), her after school activities mod. All enhance family game play. I also have her ogre and ibot mods but their annoying me lately
Littlesams (i think iv got the name wrong but it's something like that) has a first love mod so kids can have a first crush which is cute. Also has a foster family mod that looks fun
Iv also got a mod to add more traits as 3 doesn't seem enough
