For now, I'll get the lot types from the tuning files:

Remember, residential means any resident of a sim taking part of the party, be it host's, guest's etc. It also includes all the residential types (Tiny House, Haunted House, Residential Rental unit etc).
Unfortunately, residential does not include vacation rental lots and University Housing your sim is staying in (don't know if it used to). However, if these are included, you can throw it in any of those (even if the sims you're inviting aren't staying there).
*Also, Generic lot type shows up in tuning files, but you can't have a social event there.

So many things can be thrown in Community Spaces, so perhaps it's an idea for someone to make the default Community Space lot a party center or something.
So then, here are some surprising things I found there:
- You cannot have a house party at rental and university housing you're staying in.
- Some events allow rental lots. However, these will allow you to throw the event in any rental (even in ones your sims or guests aren't staying in). The same applies to University Housing.
- Only My Wedding Stories events can be done in Karaoke Bars.
- You can throw a slumber party in a spa.
- Only Growing Together events can be done in Arts Center.
- Many events allow community space to be the location of the event. However, For Rent events and Family Reunion don't allow Community Space subtypes. So if you go ahead and make it a Marketplace for example, you can no longer have a Family Reunion there.
And there it is! The big list of where each social event can be hosted in!
Edit. I don't know if community space thing is intentional or not, but I made a report on it, just in case.
