Realm of Magic: is it overwhelming?

Hi all. I haven't been able to play for months because of work and life... but i have a few more free time in the next months. I want to buy DU, but i want to do it in a bundle. I'll get DU and MS, but i'm not sure about the game pack. I only lack Realm of Magic and don't know if i should wait for a new GP (?)... I'm more of a realistic player, i own vampires but have it disabled because being a vampire changes completely the life of my sims... but i do like witches, and have liked them in previous iterations. How is it to be a witch in RoM? My sims can only be born witches (or made in cas) or can they learn to be? Can they have normal lifes, kind of having a sim that is born with powers but refuses to use them and maybe later in life decides to embrace it...? What's your experience?

  • Just like vampires, witches can be created in CAS, born in the game, or turned by already existing witches. Witch-ever way you create them, they won't have any powers at first. You have to actively make them learn powers by practicing magic, reading tomes, or being taught by other witches. They can learn to use a broom or teleportation as a fast travel method, cast magic with wands or out of their hands, and have familiars follow them around, but whether or not they do any of that is all up to you.

They don't have an alternate/dark form, their needs are the same as a non-occult sim's, and even a born witch is never forced to learn or use powers. Unlike vampires, they also don't come knocking on your door at night, and even if they do, chances are you'll never know they're witches in the first place because they don't use magic on public lots outside the Realm of Magic. So based on how you described your preferences, I think it's safe to say that witches wouldn't get in your way at all. You play with magic in households where you want it, and all your other households will not be affected by it.

Thank you for your feedback! Cool! That's exactly what i want, some households with witches and others without. And being able to get life going without witchcraft if i get bored or just want to play 'normal'. Many thanks. I think i have a bundle
  • It was bitter work in my experience, looking back I kind of wish I stayed away from the media, and went in blindly. but How could I? when this is one of two packs that I anticipated the most. That being said, yeah, it was indeed bitter work, to rework the world, and dissolve the Realm of Magic and rebuild.

Whether or not they live normal lives is completely up to you, My Sorcerers, have a balance. Between the Regicides, Daemonic Beasts, Pirates, Revolutions and other magical mischief that runs through the Kingdom of Briarheart. It's just another normal day at this point.

You just need to be aware of what you want for your characters.

Kind of wish tho, Spellcasters could "discuss the benefits of Magic" or humans can "Ask for a spell/potion."
  • I don't think it is overwhelming. You can easily choose which sims become spellcasters and it is perfectly possible to combine with a normal life. My spellcaster is currently working hard to get her degree in fine arts. To be honest I think it is best to combine their magic with a normal life so you don't rush through learning magic too quickly and enjoy it at a slow pace.

They are not as intrusive as vampires because there are no break ins or something similar. They are practically invisible because spellcasters won't use magic autonumosly out side of the magic realm. (I wish they would)
  • Very low key. If I didn't know this pack has magic would never guess just by the town and inhabitants. Have yet to have the slightest impact on any other worlds. DU intrudes more than this does.
  • The only thing I've seen most is that my magic Sims will use their broomsticks in any world. I've seen them out for a walk and then use their broom to fly away. Ive seen Sims fly in to the festival's in CL.

Other than that I haven't seen much in the way of magic in the world. Which is nice.
