My sim at first won't know about magic even though he has a strong lineage of magic. His parents gave up their powers because they hate magic and they just assumed that since they didn't have powers their son wouldn't inherit them but he did and he'll have a freak accident at a festival. After that his parents will reveal to him his family history and send him off to a boarding school for young magical youth in glimmer brook.
I'm setting up the school by clubs and using the clubs as subjects they can sign up for. So if a sim wanted to learn Untamed magic or Mischief magic they could sign up for the subject or "join the club". After the first week of school each student will be assigned a unique familiars either based on their personalities or magic they are studying then they get to go to the magic realm for a few hours and experience what's it's really like to be a spell caster. The students get to graduate when they master at least of one out of the three magics and alchemy.
I also have this idea about glimmer brook as whole like maybe the magic realm wasn't always behind the portal and that the three sages had to hide it for some reason.
