Yes, I do that as well.
My Sims only marry amongst themselves, very very rarely do they date outside of my played households. This helps a great deal with population.
I try to keep the number of households I actively play below 10 but if I have too many, it's not a big deal. I will just visit my least favourite ones only randomly for a sim day every now and then to quickly check up on them.
