Hmm...
There are so many things to fiddle with. When households age or not, when you rotate, how many households you rotate between. I would suggest that you experiment and see what suits you :)
I play a main family and then I rotate away on specific days. When I play with other households I like to turn ageing off.
The days I play the town I jump around several households and set up clubs, set skills or relationships. Since I do not want every sim to be late for work or school when I log into a new household I set these days as holidays without work or school.
So that is my way:
3-4 days main family
2 NPC-days without ageing
Anything goes during NPC-days. I just logg into any household I want to see and just go for it. It is a fun contrast to my main story. One day little old ladies playing chess in the park, next days vampires wrecking havoc in a nightclub and then after two days it is back to my main sims.
You can always do it in a testsave first
Edit: one of the things I love with this haphazard way of playing is that I truly don’t remember all the clubs and things I set up during these 12 sim-weeks I have been playing. Like going to the nightclub and seeing the vampires being a tad bit bitey. “ Did I make a vamp-club that feeds at one of the clubs? Yes, yes I did”. I play with headline effects off when I play my main household so I didn’t notice it at first because I was so into a cute sim my girl was flirting with. It went from romantic comedy to horror-flick. Fun night, got the guy at least.
